Our visit to OASIS Fish Farm

Local Grouper

One of the main ingredients of this theme dinner is the giant grouper.

In recent years, the local aquaculture company OASIS Aquaculture Technologies Asia Ltd. has developed indoor breeding of the giant grouper.

But why develop a fish farm when we can catch fish directly from the ocean?

For a long time the marine life suffered from global overfishing.

Raising fish in aqua farms with RAS systems apart from the ocean recovers marine life from overfishing.

The fish are raised in a safe and clean. The indoor farm remains the same temperature throughout the year allowing the grouper to grow in a stress free environment.

VMO Hong Kong

Vegetable Marketing Organization

In 1946 VMO was first established to control sales and trade of vegetables in Kowloon and New Territories. Moreover, the organisation was also set up to rehabilitate and facilitate local farming during post-war times. Over the years, VMO promoted local vegetable farming and improved the socioeconomic status of farming communities.

Since the establishment of the wholesale vegetable market in Cheung Shan Wan in 1965 commerce increased. Today, 26 cooperative societies have formed which collect, weigh local grown vegetables.

About Zerofootprintasia

Zerofootprintasia ZPFA is a charity organisation that advocates for climate solutions in agriculture around Asia. Restaurants can take part of ZPFA's crowdfunding programme and pledge 1% of each restaurant purchase "to fund regenerative farming practices that restore soil health, grow better food and draw down carbon from the atmosphere to help combat global warming", (zerofootprintasia.org).

What are some examples of regenerative farming practices?

Undersown
Crops

Undersown crops help to green the field all year round.

These are usually added to main crops such as cereals, corn or canola.

Rotational
Grazing

Animals are moved around the pasture to improve soil, plant and animal health.

Only a portion of the pasture is grazed at a time, while the rest of the pasture is "resting." The pasture is divided into different areas for this purpose.

Soil fertility is increased and thus Co2 from the atmosphere is stored in the soil.
